Love, amorous embrace and sex has a mysterious power; it can be a base compulsion, or an access point to transcendent bliss. For me, the body and sexual intimacy is easily exalted, made overly poetic and romanticized.

The Phoenician, or Middle Eastern backdrop sets the stage for the foreign, dream-like representation of sexuality. The song which inspired the painting sings, "You make me feel at home, when I'm far away."

The whole scene, including the woman I am laying with, is idealized. Her long legs and slender waist glisten beneath the warm dusk; a Mediterranean breeze cools our warmed skin.

A plate of fruit symbolizes the ripeness of our love, the abundance of our joy, the fecundity of our embrace. My guitar is set aside: my sorrow's are forgotten. There are no songs for now, just her eyes to behold.

The many details of this painting were accomplished through a series of meticulous references. The middle eastern scene was taken from an obscure painting in the late academic romanticism; the fruit, a combination of classical still lives.

This song was originally written in 2012, when I was in the midst of a creative streak. Last summer, when I was playing shows in Brooklyn, it was a favorite for the band and myself to perform. I used takes from band rehearsals to put together this recording, which features me on overdubbed rhythm guitar, bass, piano, organ, lead guitar and vocals.

For "Birth Certificate: The Basement Tapes" I have sourced all of my favorite, most memorable, most potent songs from the years 2011 through 2014. This culmination of many years worth of songwriting, comes together in a purposefully loose, raw and understated form.
